Background Notes

This short film features Vincent Golden, Curator of Newspapers and Periodicals at the American Antiquarian Society who describes the history and characteristics of Antebellum American newspapers. Filmed in the newspapers workroom of the American Antiquarian Society, a national research library of pre-twentieth century American history and culture, the film features examples of various newspapers and illustrated magazines. Some such as the Cincinnati Post and Anti-Abolitionist and The Liberator are featured in other sections of this site.
